MV Electrics

We can supply a full range of MV electrics, either as individual components, as kits which include all components, a wiring diagram, and a guide to wiring, or as complete boxed units (view details ). The 15W actinic tube is similar to a standard MV bulb in UV emission characteristics but emits a fraction of the visible light of a standard 125w bulb, this makes it ideal for trapping in gardens where the brightness of the standard bulb can be a problem with neighbours. The MBTF blended bulb requires no control gear and can be connected directly to the power supply although comparative catches with a 125w MV bulb suggest it is not as effective.

There has been concern expressed regarding the possibility of bulbs breaking at public moth events. To help protect against this we have designed a new bulb guard. Includes a 5mm clear perspex top with fine metal gauze sides allowing the UV light to escape but will hold back any glass in the rare event of a breakage. Includes bolts and wing nuts to allow quick access to the bulb.

Moth Traps

We specialise in quality products at affordable prices

We can supply traps in a variety of formats. DIY kits include the relevant electric kit together with plans and instructions for building your own trap and represent the cheapest way of starting moth trapping. We can also supply ready built traps constructed from top quality materials and professionally finished.

Our Skinner is 45cm square and 35cm high and is constructed from exterior ply, and varnished for extra durability. The trap comes without electrics, and you will need to choose the relevant electric kit from our list (the standard moth trap works from a 125w MV bulb). For personal safety we recommend an earth leakage trip be fitted. (SK14). The ALS 15w actinic trap is ideal for trapping in built up areas where neighbours can be a problem. It will fit onto the existing light board of our Skinner trap, so making purchase of only the relevant electrics necessary if you already own one! It is also available as a portable model with light sensor switch and will run from a 7amp hour battery (2.6kg) with excellent results, phone for further details.

Our 'Robinson type' Moth Trap is a top of the range trap made from polypropylene. The units will stack inside one another for maximum portability. They have a better holding capacity than the Skinner Moth Trap. Supplied complete with electrics and rain gaurd.

The 15w 'Heath type' Moth Trap is made from durable light weigh polypropylene. It is very durable, very easy to assemble. A mains or portable unit is available.

15W Heath Trap

The ALS Suitcase Trap is the ideal trap to keep all your equipment together during transportation. The trap collapses down and holds the control box, bulb and egg cartons all together. Ideal for holidays. Nothing gets lost - available as MV or 15W versions.

For further information please phone. We can offer both professional and beginner traps and kits to suite your pocket! The trap and kit containing the control box is a watertight (IP56) box with all the relevant electrical wiring. The choke on its own is not watertight but is easily wired up. For further details phone either 01263 862068 or 01606 783371 for friendly advice.

Microscopes
ALS have many years experience dissecting macro and micro moths, microscopy and specimen preparation. Through this experience we can offer a wide range of professionally made microscopes for the lepidopterist, starting with the dissecting microscopes, which start with the Basic Monocular (AJ00) and range to the Binocular Turret Microscope (AJ05).

The dissecting microscope is the ideal starter microscope enabling the lepidopterist a wide field of view essential for the initial stages of a dissection and also giving a certain depth of field. The Turret microscope will focus to x40, which is ideal for all macrolepidoptera genitalia and most of the pyrallid and tortrix genitalia. All our dissecting microscopes are available with photographic attachments and the AJ03 and AJ05 are also available with CCTV adapters and wooden microscope cases.

For the lepidopterist wanting a higher magnification for viewing some of the smaller microlepidoptera genitalia such as the Coleophora and the Nepticulids, we can provide a range of Compound Microscopes. It is unlikely that the lepidopterist would want a higher magnification than x100 so we have our microscopes exclusively made specifically for our purposes, therefore cutting out some of the expensive higher powered objectives thus keeping the cost of our microscopes down and to an affordable level. Why pay for accessories you would not use.

ALS provide a range of high quality, high performance compound microscopes ranging from the monocular AJ06 to the binocular AJ08. All are a high quality design and finished to an excellent standard having photographic attachments and CCTV adapters available.

We have a small range of various display models on show for anyone wanting to view. For further information on any of our models or for viewing arrangements please e-mail  us.

Friendly advice is always available, we are happy to discuss your requirements. Remember ALS run FREE dissecting courses

Binocular Compound AJ08

Shane Farrell (VC58 Macro Moth Recorder) write; 'Being very interested in photography of dissected moth structures (especially micros) I was often envious of the results obtained by others using the AJ08 bought from ALS. They could reproduce with a digital camera, features I could not even see down my microscopes. I decided to bite the bullet and invest in one.   I can now see how they did it. With absolutely everything being adjustable, superb optics and stacked with features it is a fabulous piece of kit. For the price, it is great value for money.'
